Chiraq : The Origin of the Name Prohibition was put in place to end the alcohol production, transportation, and distribution. Was it successful? No. This new amendment did not cause violence and organized crime, but it led to an increase of it. Especially in Chicago,Illinois. Gang affiliation increased, and so did the crimes that come along with gangs. Prohibition also rocked the boat about who had the power. Usually the police and high ranking officials had the power in government and businesses, but with the rise of prohibition , the most powerful people that were involved with the gangs had all the power. They would pay the police or political leaders to keep them out of trouble. Knowing background knowledge, what exactly did prohibition do to make it just that bad to earn the title of being the most dangerous city in the world? How did prohibition make Chicago’s gang affiliation increase? Prohibition, or the 18th amendment, was officially a law on January 17, 1920. With the new law, came new business. And with new business there is always a rival group. The gangs were on the rise, and were becoming a lot more powerful.
