The Morality of a Knight Have you or someone you know showed courage in your lives? There was and always will be many stories that probably have the same of amount of courage as the people you know or see in the news. One of those stories is “The Tale of Sir Launcelot du Lake”, which tells the tale of one of King Arthur’s most beloved and talented knight, Sir Launcelot. He loves to adventure and help others with moral courage. However, Sir Launcelot is not the only sense of moral courage in this story.
In the article “Chivalry,” it states that the chief chivalric virtues were piety, honor, valor, courtesy, chastity, and loyalty (3). In the book, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, we meet a knight named Sir Launcelot. Sir Launcelot is thought to be one of the greatest knights in the world. However, Sir Launcelot may have been honorable, but he was not loyal and chaste.

Generally speaking, the Green Knight told Sir Gawain that "I'm bound to be called a better man than you" simply when the Green Knight was coming down on the first strike, Gawain flinched in fear before the ax even connected to his neck. Consequently, the Green Knight mocked Gawain specifically saying, "For look how you flinch for fear before anything's felt, I never heard tell that Sir Gawain was ever a coward!" (264-265) Gawain made a pact with the Green Knight that he would requite the same swing that he made at the Green Knight. During the Medieval times chivalry was one of the most important characteristics a knight could display. Chivalry was viewed as a moral obligation that involved bravery, honor, respect, and gallantry. Knights were expected to uphold this code or face social consequences for any infractions, with punishments ranging from humiliation to termination of their knighthood. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” presents the struggles knights faced with honoring the chivalrous code at all times. Sir Gawain, while imperfect, exhibits qualities expected of knights and embodies the internal struggle between honoring the chivalrous code and giving into selfish desires.
What is chivalry, exactly, and how does Gawain demonstrate the chivalric ethos in the first two sections of the poem? [ ethos= ethical philosophy] Chivalry is the sum of the ideal qualifications of a knight including courtesy, generosity, valor, and dexterity in arms. The way Gawain demonstrates chivalric ethos is that he honors the King and shows bravery and humility by accepting the Christmas challenge and not allowing the king to do so. He keeps his word by going to the Green Chapel on the day agreed. He keeps his word by giving the Lord the kisses he gets from his wife.
Cornelius’ “The Hero’s Journey”, many events throughout Gawain’s quest show that it is simply not realistic for a knight to meet the standards set by chivalry. Cornelius suggests that a large problem of chivalric code is that it gives a knight a very self-judging mindset. This shows that the expectations of the code of chivalry is so high, that knights expect too much of themselves.
The Complexity of Forgetting In the short story Love and Honour and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice by Nam Le, readers are acknowledged the reason behind the conflict between the two protagonists, the father and the son, that it is rooted from overly strict nurturing. Not to let readers dislike the character of the father too far, the story of Thanh, the father, about his experience in Vietnam War is inserted to offer the reason of his suffering from the memory of the war which, perhaps, leads him to bring up Nam, the narrator and his son, strictly as if his life is in the war camp. The story probably arouses some readers ' pity, understanding, or interest in his attempt to forget the battle considered both his action and speech. Yet, in the meantime, although Thanh, in the first place, tries not to mention the years of service as a soldier as if to imply that it should be forsaken, getting confused later by his inconsistent actions and speeches, some readers may question whether Thanh really wants to forget the bitter experience in Vietnam War or not.
A Code of Conduct In the Medieval era, aristocrats considered knights the nobility in feudal society. Arthurian Knights are equipped with weapons and armor, while partaking in violence and bloodshed. As highly skilled fighting men, they hold power over other members of society. The only way to restrain a knight’s actions is through chivalry, or a code of conduct they have to follow. Without chivalry, Gawain, the “Prologue” knight and the “Wife of Bath’s Tale” knight would not have been able to call themselves knights.
