Chocolat is the story of a master chocolatier, Vianne, who travels from town to town with her daughter. She and her daughter wander into the village where the movie is set following the north wind. They rent a shop and the apartment above it from an elderly woman named Armande. There, the woman and her daughter establish a beautiful little chocolate shop filled with Vianne’s special-recipe chocolates. At first, the store does not thrive because the owners are outside the norm for the strict, religious village. Vianne is a known atheist with an illegitimate daughter who refuses to dress or act like the other women in town. Vianne works throughout the movie to reach out to the citizens of the village. Up to her arrival, everyone is ruled by the cold bylaws of the church. She sets an example of fighting the negative parts of the church such as ignoring abusive marriages and being unkind to certain people. By the end of the movie, she gets through everyone including the stubborn mayor and the town is reborn as a happy, changed place. There are several relationships in the film that rely on Vianne to be solved. One positive example is Armande and her grandson. A negative example is Josephine and her abusive husband. Vianne nurtures a strong bond between Armande and her grandson over arranged meetings in her shop. On the other hand, she helps Josephine escape her horrible husband by giving her a place to live and work. Unfortunately, this movie does not display the brainstorming techniques Vianne uses to solve her problems or several of the other six steps of creative problem solving. Steps one, two, four, five, and six are clearly shown throughout. Chocolat is a beautiful movie of how a woman finally finds home after bringing kindness and change to a strict, religious village.
