The choices made by people during the holocaust could change their life forever, or even get them killed. People had to make important decisions like if they should take the risk of hiding a jew, or fleeing their country. It is these decisions that could determine if they could live to see another day. The consequences and benefits of those choices would impact their lives, forever. Choices made during the holocaust like “should I resist” or “can I trust this person”, could decide that person’s fate. During World War II, many people, especially Jews, felt the urge to resist the Nazis. But of course, resisting would inevitably lead to cruel punishment. Many jews in Warsaw, Poland decided to uprise, even though they knew that they would be overpowered by the German guards. A large group of people disagreed with Hitler’s idea that Jews were an enemy of German people, however too many people were afraid of the inevitable consequences of hiding a Jew. If someone were to hide a Jew, they would have to take extremely careful precautions to avoid being found out by Nazi or anyone looking for a payment. For example in The Whispering Town, Anett and her family and her family take the risk of hiding a Jewish family in their basement and have to be quiet and careful, as seen here: “‘We have new friends’ I whispered to the librarian.’Be careful,’ she whispered back…” Even though in The Whispering Town Anett tells many people about the Jews in their basement, no one told anyone if they were hiding a Jew in their basement; it would be way too risky.
