America’s original frontier was the West. Since people from Europe came over on boat the dream has always been explore and test our capabilities against the brutalness of moving and inhabiting West. Chris McCandless, an adventurist, wanted to test his skills against the brutal life of a nomad lifestyle in the West on his journey to Alaska. The West was particularly important to Chris’s quest because of the difficult living environments that the west provides.
One of the biggest keys to success in the hot and dry geography of the american west is to find water. Rich Johnson, an executive editor of Outdoor Life Magazine, says “without a consistent supply of H2O, dehydration sets in quickly, along with low energy, poor judgement, and the eventual loss of the will to survive.”(The Ultimate Survival Manual 22). The West is known for its parched landscapes including deserts, mountains, and plains. These kinds of geography make it hard for the inhabitants to find viable sources of water at all times of the year making a key location

Even though some people can find water and food, The dangers of the weather can never be escaped. The weather is dangous anywhere in the west. earthquakkes,Blizzards, Tempatures ranging from -80 to129 degrees, tornados, dust storms, drought, and flash floods are all weather systems that can be expirenced in the West. In The Grapes of Wrath by John Steilbeck the people that live in the West cant farm thier food because of the extreme droughts that take place in that area of the country. Chris McCandless had his first encounter with the west’s weather when he expirenced a flash flood in Arizona dessert (Krakaur).
