While I disagree with callarmen to a certain extent, I fully accept his claim that McCandless made a lot of mistakes because he wasn’t fully prepared for Alaska. I disagree with callarmen when he says that Chris was just playing crazy because McCandless was highly educated and was an experienced adventurer.
Into The Wild English Final “Into The Wild” is a partial biography written by Jon Krakauer describing how the body of Chris McCandless was found in the wilderness of Alaska. "I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going to Alaska with his Romantic silliness. He made a lot of mistakes based on ignorance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble ideas. Really, I think he was just plain crazy."
I think that Chris went ‘Into the Wild’ because of family problems, emotional and psychological damage, and philosophical beliefs. Christopher Johnson McCandless was a non materialistic man in a very material demanding society which eventually led him to his death in Alaska. He saw the world differently and had such a different mindset than everyone around him; he did not think the same way. McCandless always had problems with his parents. He especially had a great anger towards his father when he found out that he had another family he kept secret, along with six half siblings.

He migrated away from civilization and society with the goal of living in solitude and living his life to the fullest through nature. The audience was introduced to McCandless’ views towards society through McCandless’ journey through Alaska, and the depressing yet inspiring events that led up to his death. Krakauer creates emotional appeals to connect him with McCandless to credit himself as a writer, as well as to develop the audiences’ feelings of McCandless.
Chris McCandless: A Reckless Idiot Chris McCandless was a reckless idiot and there is no denying that basic truth. Chris McCandless was a man born into a middle class family. Chris had parents that loved him, a roof over his head, and food to eat. Despite all those riches he had, he threw them away. Chris was a very selfish man.
In 1992 a young man sacrificed his life, his family, his wealth, and all his possessions in the hope of living what he believed to be life to the fullest. He was smart, educated, and sensible, yet he donated the entirety of his savings to charity, abandoned his car, burned the remainder of his money, and walked into the alaskan wild with little to no planning or preparation. It wasn’t until his lifeless body was found decomposing in a nearby bus that the story of this man, Christopher Mccandless began to be known to the world. Into the wild is the story of his childhood, his upbringing, his journey to alaska, and perhaps most notably, his tragic demise. When the news of his death first reached the public the two most prevalent reactions were
In the opinion of Shaun Callahan she states that Chris’s mindset was,”brilliant and ignorant”. Which made her believe that his death was caused by his actions and concept of thinking. Also as to seeing his life having many hardships he endured, the reader sees that his foolish ways drove him to die in the first place. Which can be seen as his up bringing of childhood lifestyle, countless people who cared, but he was quick to ignore and his ignorance of letting himself die in the wild, . Leading himself to the wilderness was somewhat caused by his reliance to prove a point.
The Alaskan Bush is one of the hardest places to survive without any assistance, supplies, skills, and little food. Jon Krakauer explains in his biography, Into The Wild, how Christopher McCandless ventured into the Alaskan Bush and ultimately perished due to lack of preparation and hubris. McCandless was an intelligent young man who made a few mistakes but overall Krakauer believed that McCandless was not an ignorant adrenalin junkie who had no respect for the land. Krakauer chose to write this biography because he too had the strong desire to discover and explore as he also ventured into the Alaskan Bush when he was a young man, but he survived unlike McCandless. Krakauer’s argument was convincing because he gives credible evidence that McCandless was not foolish like many critics say he was.
