In the 17th century, the New England Colonists believed in the Biblical scriptures and wanted their children to read and learn the Bible. Biblical scriptures were the only book that the New England Colonists ever knew before the New England Primer was published. The Colonists believed that the biblical scriptures brought them closer to God and by obeying his word; they would enter heaven after death. Before 1690, when the New England Primer was published, parents taught their children how to read the scriptures.
