Biblical Viewpoint on American Healthcare
When followers of Christ think of God, the images that come to mind are positive, ones of love, grace and healing. Christians are supposed to try to make themselves a mirror of God in order to better spread His love and Word. So why, when it comes to healthcare, are people so suddenly shut off from commiseration and generosity? As a Christian, one should strive to understand kindness and compassion. Jesus Himself spread a message not of selfish greed, but of selflessness and humility. How does this tie into the American healthcare system? One of the main reasons healthcare reform is not widely accepted in America is because of self-benefit; many people are opposed to a higher tax, as it could be looked at as unfair. People are worried about higher taxes, yet the Bible says to “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each one of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4, ESV). Does this not refute the money argument? It says in the Bible to look after not only one’s own personal gain, but also after the wellbeing of others, which puts the threat of higher taxes to rest. Another argument is that those who are given free healthcare will then use it to do nothing with their lives, simply taking advantage of the system. However, those people are still included in God’s people, are they not? God’s Word even says that the Lord hates robbery and wrongdoing, especially against those who have no way to fend for themselves (Isaiah 61:8, ESV). Is it wrong to deprive those in need of medical aid?
