In the 18th century, around the 1780s, Christianity was the official religion for France. France's population of about 28 million is almost all Catholic. The Church owned abbeys, churches, monasteries, hospitals, schools, covenants, and other institutions which showed that the Church was dominant in French society. The Church collected one-tenth of all agricultural production and were not taxed for their earnings. Because of its wealth, power, and land, people began to distrust the church. The Church had been attacked in many ways, like closing down the churches, emailing priests, or forcing them to migrate or resign, they had made new rules to hurt them. The people tried to dechristize France. The authorities during that time had gotten new policies to destroy anything that was from the Church like the places of worship, statues, crosses, bells, and anything that symbolized the Church. In the first week of April in 1791, groups of women started attacking the sisters' religious congregation. They did this because they thought that the sisters were teaching false principles to children. There were many other rules they added to make sure they hurt the Church.
