In her essay titled “Is ‘Screen Time’ Dangerous for Children?” Alison Gopnik addresses many parents’ concerns about how modern technology affects children. She combats their apprehension through her own personal anecdotes and a light, humorous tone. She starts off her argument with a touching short story involving her grandson, Augie, and her learning about how bees make honey. By telling the story in first person perspective, she not only connects with the reader, but she also establishes her credibility on the topic—since this event happened to her, she is in turn very knowledgeable about how it occured.

Teens need to spend more time in- person with REAL people, not sitting on their phone staring at a screen for hours on end.

Nonetheless, changes in adolescent behavior from the millennial generation triumphing it have been substantial and revolutionary. Today’s teens have never witnessed a world without internet. The majority of them possess smartphones and waste several hours each week on social media. But while numerous parents may feel allayed about their teens’ seeming uninterested in drinking, driving and dating, they could perhaps be overlooking the effects that continuous internet access has on their teens’ mental well-being.

Screen Time Should Not Be Limited Ayana Bennett So many people are on electronics all day- every day. Are you one of those people? How long are you on screens?
Because of the increasing privileges that teenagers in the 2020s are presented with, they can often be used in a negative way. For instance, today teens are given an abundance of technology, such as tv’s and phones. And due to the technological advancements of the 21st century, teens today have significantly more access to technology that can be used for good or bad. ABC News reports that “Teens spend more than 7 hours a day on screens for entertainment”. This is obviously extremely harmful to any human’s mental health, but also affects physical health.
I feel as though children should be restricted from spending time in front of media screens. Children watching media screens disrupts their sleep, mental energy, and causes depression. Media screens disrupts their sleep because all the child will want to do is watch their video games, Tv, tablets, computrers, etc. Children will stay up as late as they can to watch whatever it is that their watching, whether its on a phone, Tv, tablet, computer, etc. A child will not be getting his/her proper rest by staying up all night, thats why it disrupts their sleep.
One good thing about social media is That it strengthens our relationships. Screen time should be limited to two hours because screen time creates distractions and can foster negative behaviors. Screen time creates distractions in many ways. Screen time has been dragging us away from conversations. According to Connected but Alone by Sherry Turkles she states, “We sacrifice conversations for more connections.” This shows how technology can distract adolescents and not be able to develop face to face conversations.
The debate that is occurring is about screen time and the internet. The authors are in stasis on the level of fact and definition. However, where they sway in terms of stasis is on how to proceed with this information.
Cell Phones: The average teenager who gets on their phone, just for a second, each hour has the same mind as a 30 year old cocaine addict. Teens have their minds tricked into thinking they can’t live without their cell phones and social media. Teens need to be able to talk to and connect with others and learn face-to-face communication skills.
