In The City Of Ember, the setting is a dark and bleak society. Even though Ember has light posts placed all throughout the city, they are getting very destitute and have a shortcoming of light bulbs. Blackouts occur often. The Emberians are cognoscente about this fact, but they are still passive and don’t do anything to try to prevent this.
Through out the history of the United States, a number of incidents and disasters have occurred to influence safety and protection. In the aftermath of these events, valuable lessons are learned and steps are taken to ensure nothing like that happens again. One such incident is the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, one of the most influential and horrifying incidents in United States history. The fact that both the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and National Safety Council (NSC) trace their history back to this incident speaks to that. Sadly, the tragic events that unfolded during the Triangle fire were not surprising.

A couple months ago, I found myself at one of my old friend’s Hanukkah party. At the party, many of my old friends were scattered around the dining room table and living room, chatting as we ate latkes and chicken. Towards the end of the party, we lit the menorah, sang the traditional Hanukkah prayers and tunes, and ultimately relaxed. The orange flames danced on the menorah as we came together to take group photos – which were all obviously coordinated by our parents. In various stages of relaxation, we gathered on the couch and talked about life from where we’re thinking of going to college to old elementary school memories.
The Apache Sunrise Ceremony is a laborious 4 day and night ceremony that Apache girls partake in after completion of their first menstrual cycle. The Apache Indians, most of whom live on reservations in New Mexico and Arizona, believe that their earliest Apache relative is the ‘White Painted Woman’, that from her came life and the embodiment of earth itself. The Sunrise ceremony honors her spiritual image, and prepares Apache girls as they enter into the new phase of their life; womanhood. Preparation for the ceremony can begin as early as six months prior to the actual day. Apache girls spend much time studying their heritage and learning the responsibilities and virtues an Apache woman must uphold.
The power of stories manifests itself in literature, film, and more generally life. Stories inspire, provide hope, and bring understanding. Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel Ceremony permeates the strength of stories. Ceremony follows the story of Tayo, a half white Native American plagued by the invasion of European culture, as well as his own past of war and loss. However, through the folk stories of his Laguna culture, as well as the advice he has been given to embrace his past, Tayo is able to see the world more clearly.
Fiction vs Reality Dreams are what the world would like, but most often it is not the world we live in which is shown repeatedly in the short story “The lamp at noon” by Sinclair Rose and the poem “Up” by Margaret Atwood. The three main ideas that will be expressed will be about irony, metaphors, and personification. Personification by definition is giving human attributes to inanimate objects, personification is also a way to give life to objects which so the readers can get a proper understanding of the objects value in the story, in the short story “The lamp at noon” the readers learn that Ross was trying to give everything around the two main protagonists life so the story would have all the more meaning and emotion, “there was a wind whining high” (Ross 68) the literary device was used to give more emotion to the argument that Ross and Ellen were having, similarly in the poem “Up” there
In the story “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote, imagery is used to create an image in your mind by appealing to your five senses. Imagery is often used to describe the setting of the story and to give you an idea of what is going on. Capote shows many examples of imagery throughout the story to make you understand the importance of his memory. The use of imagery helps create the mood by making the story real and bringing you in what Capote saw.

Ceremony Ethnography In North American culture, weddings are usually a lavish celebration of joining two families. Recently, at a wedding I attended with my family, I noticed many things about the role of music in the wedding ceremony. Usually weddings are composed of a ceremony, with a reception or celebration afterwards. In this wedding, there was a limited role of music in the actual ceremony (other than the bridal procession/ “Here Comes the Bride” and when the newlyweds exited at the end of the wedding), however the role of music was more substantial in the wedding reception (in which there was celebratory music and dancing).
