If you think Columbus should not be prosecuted, think again. Columbus is not the awe-inspiring explorer he perceives to be. He has committed abounding amounts of crimes against humanity in which are shameful. Christopher Columbus has cruelly tortured, annihilated, and harshly killed many innocent Taino people.
Christopher Columbus mistreated and tortured most, if not all of the Taino people. He enforced unfair slavery and harsh commands onto the Taino tribes. He forced adults above the age of fourteen to mine for gold. This mining was so harsh that many died from exhaustion. Columbus penalized many innocent people because of their religion, he was on a mission to spread Christianity. One day a Spaniard went through the hills terrorizing the Indians and stealing their food. The Spaniard was not punished because he was Christian and Columbus believed Christians had no wrongdoing. However, instead the Indian victims were punished.

There was so much warfare, exhaustion, starvation, disease, and torture that the Taino people dropped like flies. As stated by Bartolomé De Las Casas, “there were sixty thousand people living on this island [in 1508], including both Spaniards and Indians. So that between 1494 and 1508 more than three million people died from war, slavery and the mines.” Columbus also noted his observations and plans his journals he states, “with fifty men you could subject everyone and make them do what you want.” This was because the Taino were not used to all the warfare which made it very effortless for Columbus to enslave
