1. Discuss the problems Hillenbrand has faced during her battle with chronic fatigue syndrome. Include a description of the disease itself. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a disease that plagues about one million people in the United States. With no simple diagnostic practices, it is hard to determine if a person is battling chronic fatigue syndrome. Doctors are in disagreement on the classification of the condition. Some even believe it is all in the patient 's head and that they aren’t experiencing physical symptoms. According to Dr. Charles Sheppard, “It was an illness which was either ignored, or dismissed, or regarded with extreme skepticism.” In a nutshell, the condition is distinguished by symptoms that inhibit a person’s ability to perform[ daily activities. From an outsider, it is difficult to determine if a person is suffering from the condition. Common symptoms include chronic vertigo and lack of energy. While in her sophomore year at college, Laura Hillenbrand began to feel the effects of chronic fatigue syndrome. For weeks she did not have enough energy to get out of bed. From the two books I’ve read, her writing is unprecedented and sets a standard for other writers to admire. Her struggles are imaginable. My biggest question is, “How does she do it?” She has a serious medical condition that hinders her number one passion, yet she is super successful and has books that have been bestsellers for well over three and a half years. If she can be successful, than I believe that I can be successful as well if I pour in much hard work and dedication. Hopefully, I don’t experience a condition as serious as hers, but if I do I will have to remember that there is always a light at the end of the
