Leukemia affects 43,000 people every year in our country. (University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2015). It affects not only adults but also children. For example a child got diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5 and she had to go through many different types of treatment.
Leukemia is a cancer that deals with the body’s blood forming tissues, that includes bone marrow and lymphatic system (Mayo Clinic, Causes, 2015). Leukemia involves your leukocytes and erythrocytes. The treatment you will receive will depend on what kind of leukemia the patient has. (Mayo Clinic, How Leukemia is classified, 2015). There are many different types of leukemia for instance acute, chronic, lymphocytic, and myelogenous. (Mayo Clinic, How Leukemia is classified, 2015). Acute lymphocytic leukemia is most common in younger children but adults are able to get it. Acute myelogenous is common in children and adults but it is the most common in Acute Leukemia. Chronic Lymphocytic is the most common adult leukemia. Lastly chronic myelogenous is mainly common in adults. They tend to have few to no symptoms of the cancer. They typically show symptoms before they enter the phase where the cells grow faster

Well according to Mayo Clinic it is caused when some blood cells acquire mutation in their DNA. (Mayo Clinic, How Leukemia is formed, 2015). In Acute Leukemia abnormal blood cells are immature blood cells that tend to multiply quickly causing the disease to get worse quickly. Chronic Leukemia has more mature blood cells that replicate slower and can function like normal cells. Someone can have this and show no symptoms and it can go unnoticed for years. Lymphocytic Leukemia affects lymphocytes. Lymphocytes form lymphoid tissues that make up the immune system. Myelogenous Leukemia affects the myeloid cells.
