Welle’s “Citizen Kane” has received much critical acclaim, despite not being a large success in the box office. The film uses mise-en-scene, specifically, in the spatial relationships between props. The relationships are well represented in “Citizen Kane”, especially in the scene in which Thompson goes to the William Thatcher Library. The first image of the library shows an unnecessarily large table holding only a book and only has one chair. When Thompson sits in the chair, his back is to us, and the door closes in our face. A flashback occurs, and when it ends, we now see Thompson’s front. This is symbolic of the idea that Thompson is “going in blind”, where he’s stuck in his investigation.
