Doon Harow from the novel, City Of Ember is not how he seems and is not a hero. The first reason Doon isn't a hero is because he has a bad temper and can get angry very easily. In the City Of Ember, when you are 13, the mayor comes to the class and then you draw a card from a bag containing the job you will have for the rest of your life. While most people either get the job they want or the one they don’t, none of them show disgrace and have a bad temper, until it’s Doons turn. No hero would show their temper like this in front of anyone, especially the mayor. This clearly proves that Doon is not a hero. Another instance when Doon Harrow shows his bad temper is when Doon has a bug on his arm and the kids start to laugh at him. The author states; “Enraged Doon jumped up and shouted at them, his sudden motion made the bug slip off his arm and to the ground he felt a crunch under his foot” (DuParu, 14). In this quote it is obvious that Doon has a bad temper and that can clearly affect other people or animals in this case. His engaged movements made the bug fall off his arm and end its life. This occurrence demonstrates that Doon is stubborn for the reason that while he and the mayor were arguing, he refused to sit down and really displayed his repulsive attitude. This was a clear instance when Doon displayed his stubbornness to the mayor, no less. A hero would never do this, and that is one of the many other reasons Doon should not be classified as a hero. Another occurrence when Doon is being stubborn is when he and his classmates play a game to see who can climb the most up the pole. Everybody was laughing and having fun until it was Doons turn. He climbed the pole the most out of anyone but then he fell and landed funny and the other kids laughed at him, especially Lina.
