Family comes in various forms, and they determine our character as well as the way we see the world. But, indeed, families are complex and there are a lot of connections that aren’t so simple. In James Hurst's story of “The Scarlet Ibis,” it shows us the powers of the family and how those complexities will not only change our sense of being but will also influence how we think and act. In the progression of the story, we can witness the narrator feeling towards Doodle evolve. Every now and then, the narrator expresses genuine care and affection. However, on many occasions, his pride gets in the way. This change makes him obsessed with forcing Doodle to do things that are beyond his powers, and he often pushes him too far by trying to change him. Such a desire to rearrange doodles shows the different aspects of family ties common with people. Families at times try to shape others into their own images, instead of accepting them for who they are. Doodle's tragic death is a clear warning of how the destructive nature of family conflicts can prove fatal. Being their own masters towards changing doodles, their pride and hurt brought their brothers misfortune. The saying “Family is everything” has never been truer than in this case of this Doodles tragedy where we can see how family bonds can guide a person's life choices which sometimes can lead us to take actions that we later might regret.
