“The Scarlet Ibis”: Person vs Fate The definition of fate is ‘The supposed force, principle, or power that predetermines events.’ Fate is a fairly complicated idea. Could something really determine how our lives unfold? Perhaps there’s a higher power? One thing is definite. No matter what, everything seems to fall into place eventually. The concept of fate is really interesting and intriguing. You just happen to hit every red light and didn’t make your appointment on time only to hear about how the building was engulfed in flames or you decide to visit a different coffee shoppe one day and meet the love of your life. Why did the narrator end up with a brother that he was utterly disappointed in? None of them wanted such a big responsibility. There is only one answer to these questions. Fate. Fate acted out into these situations. If everything happens for a reason, then Doodle was purposely put into their lives for a certain purpose. The narrator tells of how he wants nothing more than to have someone to play with and to do activities with. Infact, the narrator stated, ‘It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable.’ His thoughts probably consisted of, ‘Why did this happen to me? Why do I have to have an invalid brother? He won’t be able to do anything.’ Just as he was losing hope completely, Doodle raised his head and grinned at the narrator. Doodle’s big brother yells to his mother in excitement. They were all overjoyed to find that the child was alright. Doodle progressed over time, but couldn’t walk. Doodle couldn't participate in the things that his older brother participated in. They both would go down to the Old Woman Swamp and that is the location, in which the older brother decides to teach Doodle how to walk and the unbelievable sighting a Scarlet
