Shanti Elliott doesn’t love the current Civic Engagement program either. As the director of Civic Engagement, she sees a lot of flaws in the current situation. “ I would prefer Civic engagement much more through classes as opposed to this separate program and separate set of requirements,” Elliott said. “Which does feel forced. It feels artificial.”
Social media has revolutionized how people form political opinions and make election decisions. Social platforms like Twitter are used by candidates to broadcast messages, build excitement for the candidate, inform voters about policy, and identify voters interest to properly target audiences for both voting and donating. Social media is an important tool in promoting political change and allows access to and conversation about political debates. With more Americans using computers, smartphones, and the internet politicians are turning to social media to reach voters. The Internet is a real-time interactive medium that allows people to send and receive information.
Malcom Gladwell puts forth an argument about whether true social and political activism can take place through the use of Internet social media. Gladwell further explains the advantages of social media, especially Twitter, what is has done, and how it has impacted the lives of individuals and countries. I affirm that, the social media has presented a policy for expression, and will be a new change for everyone in the society. Tools of social media such as Twitter and Face-book have brought a new perspective in social activism. These technological platforms have made it easier even for the powerless to cooperate, collaborate and also air their opinions, as compared to the traditional political and social authority.
Social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook act as a vehicle for mobilization and change. Activists can garner support from a myriad of sources, many of which can participate nearly anywhere with access to social media. Through hashtags on Twitter, people expressed their opinions regarding Ferguson and brought international spotlight on the case. Furthermore, the use of Twitter during the Boston Bombing itself revolutionized the way news is gathered and processed, as thousands of users on Twitter tweeted about the events in real time. Thus, social media increases political participation and fosters a more interconnected and involved civil society

The Civic Engagement Activity that I choose to participate in was volunteering at the Madera County Library. My Civic engagement took place in my community library and I volunteered there for four days, which were the 15th, 20th, 22th, and the 23rd. The Madera County library provides its community with numerous services that have many benefits to them. I believe that volunteer service for this organization is important because it is a service that can be utilized by the community members and it is beneficial to have. The County Library does not have many employees, which means that they do not have time to do certain things during the day, and that’s where the volunteers come in handy.

Social media is corrupt because while connecting us, it has disconnected us by attaching and absorbing our society in social media, rather than reality
When looking to the future of increasing voter turnout, many might assume increasing social media presence might be the key. With more and more Americans growing up with and become acclimated to using the internet and social media, it would only make sense to attempt to reach them here. However, some parts of the internet are more useful to reach audiences than others. For instance, search engines seem to contribute to more political knowledge than social media, “Search engines were the only IAT to significantly contribute to political knowledge” (Stephens et al. 391). This information might come as a shock.
In 2012, Barack Obama and his opponent Romney had used several social media platforms, including Spotify, Pinterest and Instagram. Although many users expressed their annoyance about the campaign advertisement, the figures never lie: Barack Obama’s Facebook page had attracted over 30 million likes since his time as a presidential nominee (Lee). In 2008, President Obama’s campaign was also praised for its innovative use of social media to engage young voters.
