The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
During the Civil War there were many differences besides slavery. This war had the most American deaths than all of the wars the U.S. has been in combined! The south seceded from the north for slavery and other less important reasons. The North had more of nearly everything like navy, soldiers,horses, and food, while the south had slaves, cotton, and donkeys/mules. Throughout the war many great leaders rose and fell, battles fought, and great and terrible outcomes.
The Ride to Shiloh When people recall the Civil War, the battle of Shiloh rarely rings a bell. People usually think of the Battle of Gettysburg or the first shots fired at Fort Sumter, while failing to realize the importance of the lesser known battles which left a considerable impact, the battle of Shiloh included. Out of all the “Lost Cause” films covered in Jones’ article, The General appears to be the tamest. It doesn’t seem to glorify the Confederacy and besmirch the Union, unlike films such as Birth of a Nation, mainly because it wasn’t focused on either side. The focus of the film was on Johnnie (the protagonist) and his quest to reclaim his train and rescue Annabelle (the love interest). He happens to be a Confederate civilian, but the film never shows him actively supporting Confederate ideals, such as slavery. In addition, he doesn’t try to enlist in the army until Annabelle asks him if he’s going to or not, suggesting that he’s primarily enlisting to please her, rather than to join the cause.

During the Mid 1800’s marked a crucial period for our country. It will have a big effect on the development of our country. Throughout this time, our country was split, split into two sections, the North and the South. The Civil war was a war fought against the North and the South, the Union and the Confederates, from 1861-1865.
