During the civil war (lasting from 1861 to 1865) many changes in our nation occurred. Some of those changes were in government, agriculture, work, laws, military, and machinery. The military and machinery advancements that occurred during the civil war were very large steps into the things we used today. They modernization of the military tactics and weapons made it easier for the U.S. to fight and the new machinery made those new “modern” ideas come to life. Some vehicular advancements in the military were the repeating rifle and the submarine. Pre-Civil War, infantry soldiers usually used muskets that only held one bullet at a time. During this time, hot air balloons were used to help look over mountains and large plots of land, as to plan attack routes and scout out cover without walking into the enemies’ territories. Although the first untethered manned hot air balloon flight was performed by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d 'Arlandes on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France, in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers; the balloons used in the civil war were made by Thaddeus Lowe and Union aerial reconnaissance.
Another form of vehicular advancement was the first submerines created and used during the civil war. In 1861, French inventor Brutus De Villeroi built the union navy the first submersible warship. On May 1, 1862 a 47-foot-long, oar-propelled submarine called the Alligator became the first submarine ship of the U.S. Navy. The machine’s first mission was to destroy a bridge and clear a path on the James Rivers and Virginia 's Appomattox. None of the rivers were at all deep enough to get the Alligator to fully submerge and she was returned to the Washington Navy Yard.
Through all of the civil war, many new inventions came to be. So many technological advancements were created and those advancements helped with what we have today. The weapons, vehicles, and machines helped modernize war and shaped how we live
