During the Civil War there were many differences besides slavery. This war had the most American deaths than all of the wars the U.S. has been in combined! The south seceded from the north for slavery and other less important reasons. The North had more of nearly everything like navy, soldiers,horses, and food, while the south had slaves, cotton, and donkeys/mules. Throughout the war many great leaders rose and fell, battles fought, and great and terrible outcomes.
Even though the railroad was made before the separation between the north and the south and it’s main job was to provide supplies for both sides, the invention of the railroad greatly contributed to the civil war. During the war the railroad was used to provide supplies for the war. If this invention didn’t exist then both sides would rely on the mississippi river and other channels of water and both sides would be a little more similar when it comes to culture. .The Civil War changed the country in many ways. Thousands of men on both sides died during the Civil War. “The Union Army lost 352, 528 men and the Confederate Army lost 258,000 men” (Doc F). Innovative ways to fight came about during the Civil War.
During the time of the Civil War, the U.S. Navy had just gotten a new ship the USS Monitor. This ship was not the same type of ship as the others they had. They were used to wooden vessels, and the USS Monitor was an iron steamship. The book Iron Coffin: War, Technology, and Experience aboard the USS Monitor written by David A. Mindell shows what it was like to have to get accustomed to the new ship and the conflicts faced because of people’s thoughts on new technology.
Not only did the railroads allow for supplies to be moved faster it also allowed for troops and reinforcements to be moved faster. Ammunition and food could be sent to soldiers and generals who had diminishing supplies this meant that battles could last longer. To say the time period following the Civil War in the United States involved a lot of change would be a understatement. Between the years 1870 and 1900 the people of the United States lived through a period of great change. Not only did they witness technological advances that would change their daily lives, they also saw new laws and organizations formed. All of this was done in hopes of improving the country. Many of these changes came about because of the type of businesses that were formed.
Innovative weaponry had a large impact on the Revolutionary War. A weapon is a tool designed to inflict bodily harm or physical damage. During the Revolutionary War weapons had to be improved to insure victory. There was a variety of weapons used by the British and the Americans in the Revolutionary War. The innovation of weapons in the Revolutionary War was important, including the Brown Bess, the invention or rifling, and the Kentucky Rifle.
The War Between the States was one of America’s greatest wars—it was the fight for freedom, but it also impacted the economy. Because of this, America’s labor and transportation systems both took a significant turn during the Civil War, impacting America’s economy forever. In the end, the American Civil War greatly benefitted our transportation system, but devastated the South’s labor force. For a war to be fought strategically well, there first must be a form of simple, yet speedy, transportation. That is where the transcontinental railroad came in.
In recent discussions of Civil War technology, a controversial issue has been whether medicine or telegraph were more critical to winning the war. On one hand some argue that the telegraph was essential to the war effort. On the other hand, however, others argue that medicine was more essential in winning the Civil War. Based on the article Modern Medicine’s Civil War Legacy “During the Civil War, both sides were devastated by battle and disease” (OneNote). Based on this evidence, disease took more lives during the Civil War than conflict did therefore medical advancements were essential to win the Civil War.
This allowed more time to set up trenches, medical tents and weaponry. Horses were primarily used for cavalry, but they also moved supplies and weaponry, as well as pulled ambulance carts (National Army Museum, n.d.). Horses can travel anywhere a soldier can while a cart cannot. This meant horses even though unable to carry as much. As a result, the time to get to the battlefield was reduced as the carts were not weighing down the line (National Army Museum, 2019).
This began the first military draft, advances in war via ships, and newer forms of guns. The war divided the North (Union) and the South (Confederate) by states and the war ultimately ended with the victory of the North. Another unexpected addition to this war was that women were involved in many different facets. Some women secretly fought in the war, but others played parts as spies, nurses, abolitionists, and feminists. Women did not generally have a place in the days before the civil war, except as home makers so with the diversity
The civil war had a very profound effect on America and what it has become today. With the civil war many changes took place such as 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. Women’s rights were put forth into motion. Along with Reconstruction laws being passes and the push back that these laws caused. During this time the south became even more divided and started to take things into account and create their own laws in regards to racism.
One new weapon during the civil war was the musket and what came with the musket was the mini ball that inflicted severe damage to whatever it hit (mostly bone and tissue of a human). The new weapons were used in all of the civil war battles, one was the newer cannons built on the ironclads like the monitor and the Merrimack during the battle of Hampton roads. The Mini balls, muskets, and cannons helped start a new advancement in weaponry all the way to weapons of mass destruction. Don’t forget the weapons also caused a lot of deaths as said in the last paragraph above. This new innovation of weapons helped the union inflict a lot of damage of lees forces in a lot of the battles like the battle of Gettysburg.
Railroads served to support the armies by defending soldiers from attacks of enemies. According to John Elwood Clark in the article Railroads in the Civil War states, “Soldiers before the Civil War thought of interior lines in terms of space, or distance, although geography sometimes conferred an additional advantage. The Civil War began to modify the concept, increasingly framing the advantage in terms of time, as railroads and steamboats improved travel speed and freight loads; today’s soldiers call it ‘‘superior lateral communications. ’’(Clark 28) Railroads improved war efforts significantly by conveniencing soldiers
