They fought because they pursued slavery, wanted State’s Rights, and for the love of Texas. The main reason they fought is because they wanted slavery. Most people in Texas earned money by farming. Without any technology, the farmers bought hundreds of slaves to work for them.
NOTE: The battles of Texas were not in such a consecutive order, certain ones overlapped and some had occasional intermissions. The battles mentioned in this paper are the ones the author felt had been overlooked and needed to be recognized, not all of the battles are listed in this paper. Texas became a US state on December 29th, 1845. Many people know how Texas was originally Mexican territory, and how there were many battles between the Mexicans and Texans to officially claim the land.
Slavery was a big part of our nation’s history. The North and the South had different opinions of slavery which led to the Civil War. The first arrival of slaves was in 1619. A Dutch ship brought twenty Africans to Virginia and they were sold. It spread to the thirteen colonies and, by 1776, almost 600,000 slaves lived in our country.
It was where a very important battle took place for Texans to fight for independence from Mexico. The war ended in 1836 when Mexican General Santa Anna was defeated by a small group of Texans. Who lived in Texas prior to independence?- Mexicans Why did Texas declare its independence?-Many American settlers and Tejanos wanted to leave Mexico and become independent. Santa Anna made laws they did not agree with, so they wanted to fight against them. Why was Texas annexed by the US?- Polk was able to achieve the annexation of Texas through many things.
Despite their disadvantages, eighteen counties in Texas had voted against seceding, but it did not matter in the end. Some people, such as Judge E.J. Davis, refused to swear an oath of loyalty to the confederacy and started a Texas U.S. cavalry to fight against it. During the war many Texans were unhappy with the Conscription Acts of 1862 because they exempted slave owners of 20 or more slaves from Confederative service. After the war was over there was still a lot of discord among Texans. Some were angry at the men that did not fight for the Confederacy and others were angry at those who fought against the Union.
Texas fought in the Civil War to protect state’s rights, love of Texas(sectionalism), and to keep slavery. Texas fought in the Civil War to protect state’s rights. It states, “...the true theory of our (national) government as an association of sovereignties (independent states), and not a blended mass of people in one social compact (Document C.) State’s rights are the rights and powers that each state have that are not in the Constitution. This statement is saying that all the individual states thought that they were individual countries.
Why would anyone want to join? Why did Texans fight in the Civil War? Texans fought the Civil War because they wanted to preserve slavery, they loved their state, and they wanted to protect state’s rights. A reason many Texans joined the war was because they wanted to show their love and support for Texas.
During the Civil War in the 19th century, one problem the war solved was to protect and keep the Union together. The war successfully stopped the South from seceding. That was the main purpose of the war before the question of ending slavery was the main goal of the war. Abraham Lincoln voiced that he did not want war when he was first elected, but when the slave states wanted to secede peacefully, Lincoln didn’t take that lightly. He felt that secession in any form is an exercise of power (Hakim 16).
Texans fought in the Civil War because of, states rights, their love for Texas, and the protection of slavery. States rights was a major cause for the Civil War. “This is a Union of equal states, and no state can force another state either to remain in it or withdraw from it,” (Document C). This talks about how no matter what the federal government says, the states have a right to not follow that rule. And, this was one of those times where certain states used that right, to protect their opinion.

If the enduring vision of America is embodied in the Declaration of Independence's statements about equality and universal rights to justice, liberty, and self-fulfillment, how much progress toward those ideals had blacks and women made by 1877?
Houston stated, “When Texas joined the United states she entered not into the north, nor into the south but into the union” (Campbell, p.179). Houston was firm on the belief that Texas should remain loyal to the union and remained calm hoping that the people would do the right thing. Unfortunately, at the convention Houston saw as one hundred and sixty-six votes favored the secession. Houston now a sixty-eight years old man left with an emotionless face out of the convention and, “The flag of the confederacy flew over the capitol as Houston left Austin” (Campbell, p.194). Soon after that Texas was involved in the civil war, a war Houston hoped to never see.
The Civil War is characterized as the bloodiest war in American History. From 1861 to 1865, the North and South fought over several of disagreements and encounters. The Civil War caused hundreds and thousands of men to lose their life, about 620,000 soldiers had died. The Civil War was fought in Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, and Florida. Civil War began because the North wanted to abolish slavery, the South seceded from the Union, and the North overpowered the South.

In 1821 Mexico declared itself free from their mother country of Spain.
