As America started to gain more western land, new parties popped up that wanted to stop the expansion of slavery. Tension between the North and South arose as “slavery or not” became a popular question. New lane, new people, and new ideas being presented, the North and the South began to break, leading to the Civil War. During the purchase, Thomas Jefferson believed in strict construction, a literal interpretation of a statues or document by a court. A territorial government was established in 1804. Missouri Compromise and The Compromise of 1820, had 11 slave and 11 free states. Missouri saw acknowledgement to the union as a slave state and was the first asking to be created from the Louisiana Purchase. Compromises concerning slavery, states’ sighs, and economical issues were used to please the North and South. In 1820, Maine was an entrance of a free state during the Missouri Compromise. Missouri entered as a slave state in 1821 and slavery was banned North of 36•36’ N. The Compromise of 1850, was submitted by Henry Clay. He thought the compromise would settle the differences between the North and South. He spoke, “I go for honorable compromise whenever it can be made.
