Lost Boys of Sudan In 1987, the civil war made over 20,000 young boys and girls run from their families and close friends in Southern Sudan. Elijah Manyok Jok is a boy from Sudan who had to run away from his village and he ran from Sudan all the way to Kenya. This all took place in Southern Sudan and Kenya. He had to run away from sudan because there was a war going on while he was there so he ran away to survive. Elijah Manyok Jok is a lost boy from Sudan,who faced many challenges, accomplished many things, and is the founder and director of Smile Again, an African development.
A long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park explains the story of a boy named Salva who lives in Sudan and must flee from war and desperately trying to find his family again. First, a young eleven year old boy named Salva who lives in Sudan, is a Dinka, and in 1985, is in school one day, when his village is attacked, forcing him to flee into the bush. The group Salva was with left him, but an older lady living near by gave him peanuts and let him stay in her barn. Salva found a group of his own people and later, a man named Buksa found a beehive and they all ate the honeycomb. A boy named Marial became friends with Salva, and to Salva's joy, Salva found his Uncle, but in the night Uncle woke Salva and told him that Marial was gone.
In 1983 a war began between northern and southern Sudan and about 2 million civilians were killed and more than 4 million people were forced to flee their homes, those people were called the Lost Boys of Sudan and were fleeing violence and afraid of being forced into. The Lost Boys of Sudan had to walk great distances with limited resources and by the time they all reached a refugee camp in Kenya only about 10,000 out of the original 26,000 survived. In the historical fiction book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park a Lost Boy named Salva is trying to survive and find his family throughout his journey through rough terrain. Living in the middle of a warzone has become second nature for the refugees living in Southern Sudan. The novel, A Long Walk to Water, written by Linda Sue Park is based on the true story of Salva and his journey to refugee camps all over Africa over the last 30 years. Salva was one of the thousands of Lost Boys to make it out of Sudan and travel to America for safety. Through all of this Salva has proven he is a survivor by enduring hostile environments, being a leader for others, and pushing forward despite the loss of his friends and family. There are many ways Salva has shown he is a survivor, but the biggest example was him undergoing the harsh environments of Southern Sudan.
The Lost Boys of Sudan is a name they gave to a group of refugees who escaped Sudan because of the civil war that was occurring. In order to reach Kakuma in Kenya, they had walked more than a thousand miles. Their trip started in Sudan then they started walking to Ethiopia. However, they had to go back and head to refugee camps in Kenya instead. They had faced several challenges when they were walking.
First, the text mentions that around 17,000 young Sudanese boys fled from Sudan after being separated from their families when a civil war began, and survived a total of a 1,000-mile journey. The Lost Boys traveled a long, challenging route to safety.

Actually, the boy were worried that if soldiers came, they would make them fight or would just bomb them by plane. The older boys had to carry the younger children or the sick. Even the small boys needed to do a job to ensure the group safety and life. Dangers were wild animals, poisonous berries and other deadly food, and bomber planes. Even with all of these problems, the group made it to Kenya with less than 300 deaths.
Have you ever gone through the desert with only a small gourd of water? Well, the Lost boys of Sudan went through South Sudan to get away from the war, and some other challenges. In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.
These expectations were reasonable because considering the situation the people in Africa were in and how the boys got the opportunity for a better life, it would be the right thing to help their fellow friends and family because they wouldn’t have been able to go to the U.S and have a better life without the help of their peers. The people in Sudan were being fair because they were in desperate need of resources and even though they needed supplies, they weren’t fully pressuring the boys and they gave them time to get a job, give money to the government, and still have money left over for themselves. These expectations given by the people of Sudan impacted the boys because it meant they had to work extra hard and maybe even work later hours, so they can earn a little more. The boys, as shown in the documentary, had to deal with difficulties they may not want to such as waking up early and waiting two hours outside the

Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush,that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination,and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.
