Throughout the story we get to see the ups and downs that Mahmoud has to deal with. The Lost Boys of Sudan is a name they gave to a group of refugees who escaped Sudan because of the civil war that was occurring. In order to reach Kakuma in Kenya, they had walked more than a thousand miles. Their trip started in Sudan then they started walking to Ethiopia. However, they had to go back and head to refugee camps in Kenya instead. They had faced several challenges when they were walking.
Elijah Lewis a important character in the book that stands up to racism and cares about him and his family. Elijah doesn’t like white people being disrespectful to him because of his skin color he said “Next person to be racist i’m punching them right in the face”. He also cares about his family and was “sweet” on Goldie, Elijah lived with Moses and Grandma Saran. He was 16 when he was first introduced in the book. He had the impact Lizzy did even if the story passed him you will still think about Elijah and compare him to the new person Tommy and how they have their differences and similarities.
Elijah of Buxton, written by Christopher Paul Curtis, is set in a small settlement of runaway slaves in Buxton, Canada in 1860. The settlement compromises of fields with horses and mules along with thick woods. This book takes place during a time of slavery in the United States. Runaways from Kentucky and other Southern states came to Buxton to be free from slavery with the help of abolitionists. In Buxton, there were also children who were born free such as Emma Collins, who is used by the town to draw in runaways, and Elijah Freeman.

First, the text mentions that around 17,000 young Sudanese boys fled from Sudan after being separated from their families when a civil war began, and survived a total of a 1,000-mile journey. The Lost Boys traveled a long, challenging route to safety.
Challenges, we add had this problem trying to get what is blocking your way to sesses or survival. Also with that they need so much determination to do it. In the dust bowl clip people were fighting and was determined to stay alive.

He had a lot of adversities that affected his life, he lost a lot of people he loved. What comes to your mind when you think of the word adversity? Adversities are difficulties, misfortunes.
Throughout time, people have had to go through hardships, or face adversity. How they handle that adversity is a great measure of their character. Some people give up and lose when faced with a little bit of difficulty. Others, however, use the adversity to motivate them to become a better person who uplifts others under a common cause. Challenges are events that are used to change you for the better should you choose it accept it. The challenges I have faced wasn’t a matter of choice but of something that I have no control over. Some people will tell you it’s a burden, some say it’s an entitlement or free ride. Science says it’s just having a high amount of melatonin due to geographical location for survival. To me though, being black probably one of the biggest challenges a human can have in America at least I find it terribly perplexing.
In Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk to Water, demonstrates one of many true stories of many a Lost Boy. Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush,that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination,and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.
Don’t judge people on their outward appearance Have you ever witnessed someone or somebody judging a person just because of the way they look? In the book When Zachary Beaver came to town you witness the characters in the book being very quick to judge people when they really don’t know the person or have even talked to the person. Later in the book the people of the town have a change in heart and they realize that people are different then they might seem from the outside. I believe that the author was trying to get the point across to not judge and to get to know the person first before you make any assumptions.
Lost Boys travel together for protection. Many of the Lost Boys are young and trying to escape the civil war. Like a pack of wolves, protection comes in large groups and they can look out for each other. The attacks that take place in Sudan mostly occur at night, which is another reason why they stay together. The older boys could provide protection to the younger ones and maybe some of the boys knew things which the others didn’t, and they could have taught the others what they know.
The lost boys faced many hazards and physical challenges during their long and hard journey. Many of the lost boys fled their homes during war and became diaspora. From fleeing from their homelands to the camps in Kenya the lost boys faced many challenges. Their biggest challenges were food, water, and walking. They had to walk over hundreds of miles to get to these camps.
