Linda Sue Park guides us through the book A Long Walk to Water about a Sudanese refugee named Salva one of the only Lost Boys of Sudan that survived. Salva fled from his school when the war came to his part of the country. In A Long Walk to Water there were a few factors that made survival possible for Salva, support from loved ones, hope and perseverance, and opportunity. One factor that Salva survive was help and support from loved ones. In the novel Salva was scared and alone without his family after fleeing from school and into the bush.

Salva and thousands of other young men and boys must escape the Second Sudanese Civil War. The Lost Boys are what they are being called. The Lost Boys are forced to flee their families and friends.
The boys in the novel do many things to survive in the deserted island. They go hunting for pigs and make fire places to stay warm and cook the food. The fire is also used as a signal for planes and boats passing nearby. The young kids are the most afraid of the monster on the island, but the older boys make them feel safer by making sharp sticks. The one survival strategy they use that is most like the one used in the expedition is when jack states "This head is for the beast.
In Linda Sue Park’s novel A Long Walk to Water, demonstrates one of many true stories of many a Lost Boy. Salva an eleven year old had to flee from his village all alone because his village was attacked due to the Second Sudanese War that began in 1983. When Salva was at school and his village was being attacked,he was told not to go home, but into the bush,that's where his whole journey began. Salva had to show confidence, determination,and perseverance in order to survive in a difficult environment.
The Lost Boys of Sudan is a name they gave to a group of refugees who escaped Sudan because of the civil war that was occurring. In order to reach Kakuma in Kenya, they had walked more than a thousand miles. Their trip started in Sudan then they started walking to Ethiopia. However, they had to go back and head to refugee camps in Kenya instead. They had faced several challenges when they were walking.
The boys need fend for themselves and they all had to figure out how to survive. Eventually all of the boys soon turned into savages and went against one another by hurting the others. There are two main characters who took charge right away due to no supervision: Jack and Ralph. Jack was mainly in charge of hunting, and Ralph was in charge of shelters. Each of the boys are in competition for chief, which leads to lack of authority.

These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.

They become less logical, and the little ones start to think there is a beast on the island, which causes them to kill their friend, Simon, thinking he was the beast. They are constantly stressed out and their behaviors change as the story progresses.
The boys no longer had adults in their lives, and because of this void, they had to become responsible. They attempted to create rules, shelters, and a way off the island.
