Clara Barton Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born on December 25, 1821, in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Her parents were Sarah Stone Barton and Captain Stephen Barton. Her father, Captain Stephen Barton, was a soldier under the command of General Anthony Wayne in his fight against the Indians in the northwest. He was a leader of the progressive thought in the Oxford village area. When Clara was three, her and her brother stephen were sent to school. In school, she excelled in spelling and reading. She was only known to have one close friend, Nancy Fitts. Clara was very shy and timid, so she wasn’t extremely social (wikipedia). Clara always wanted to help people, she liked to be useful. David Barton, Clara’s brother, fell off of a roof when she was around the age of 10. She learned how to distribute prescribed medicine, and she even nursed him back to health after the doctors had given up. He made a full recovery. Stones High School. They wanted to help with her shyness, which backfired and caused her to become depressed and stop eating. The family moved out to a farm, where Clara played and hung out with her cousins, who were boys. She always helped to rebuild the house, where she would do work to contribute to what the family was doing. “Clara was persistent in offering assistance, much to the gratitude of her family. After the work was done, Clara was at a loss because she had nothing else to help with, to not feel like a burden to her family”.-(wikipedia.com). Clara had an injury, which caused her mother to question if she should be practicing more feminine hobbies and activities. Her mother invited one of her female cousin over to teach her some skills that she would have in her life
