Throughout the Revolutionary War, the men now known as the Founding Fathers or Sons of Liberty were regarded as superstars and icons. Meanwhile, the women of the time period played a behind the scenes role that ultimately led to the success of the colonists just as much as the men’s actions did. Perhaps the most famous of these women was Elizabeth Griscom, also known as Betsy Ross. She lived a life of fulfillment and her support for the colonies never wavered; she was a force to be reckoned with. Through her contributions concerning the nation’s flag and her involvement with the patriotic Free Quakers, she has become the poster woman of the American Revolution.
I remeber Alice Magaw and Lavinia Lloyd Dock from the Nursing history books where we used to study. And also I must mention about Clara Barton who was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” during the Civil War and assigned special duties by President Lincoln. Dorothea Dix who taught poor and neglected children, dedicated her time to social welfare in England, founded the first public mental hospital in America and became the Superintendent of Union Army Nurses and Mary Eliza Mahoney, who was the first African-American professional registered nurse. These figured have contributed alot to the Nursing
The American Revolutionary war was a huge event for not only America, but the world. There were heroes and there were people who were against certain things. One person who was considered as a hero of this time was female Sybil Ludington. According to National Women's History Museum website, “Sybil Ludington is the female counterpart to the more famous Paul Revere.” According to notes, “Sybil Ludington is considered a hero because of her action of warning Putnam and Dutchess counties to warn the militia that British troops were burning Danbury, Connecticut”.
Clarissa Harlowe Barton, or Clara, was born on Dec.25, 1821, in Oxford Massachusetts. She is one of the most honored women in American history. She began teaching school at a time when most teachers were men and she was one of the first women to gain employment in the federal government. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to the men trying to keep their spirits up.
Throughout Barton’s life, she established many organizations, but they all were centered around one goal, helping people. Helping people was Barton’s mission in life. To this day, she is widely known along with her organization, the American Red

Finally, considering the attack on the Maine was an intentional attack by the Spanish, it could have been an assassination attempt. Clara Barton, founder of the Red Cross, was in Cuba during the revolt against Spanish rule (Remember the Maine). She was helping the medically-deprived people in the area when the Maine showed up in Havana harbor. Clara Barton boarded the ship, had dinner, and left hours before the Maine unexpectedly exploded. To think of this as a cause of the destruction of a U.S. battleship is too elaborate.
The person I will be mainly talking about is Ida B Wells. Ida B Wells was a phenomenal woman who had a why. Who wouldn’t back down from anything no matter what backlash she would get from it? She was part of a few who begin the Civils Right movement. She displays resilient and also perseverance.
Although we aren’t dealing with the issue of slavery today, there are a lot of other modern- day issues going on in society where we could use a leader like Tubman. Its people like her that really leave a mark in this world and are not lost in an abyss of all the others. Not because of a huge world war she was a part of, but because she helped put an end to some form of corruption, because she helped. One of the things that really stands out to me when I think of Harriet Tubman though, is that she gave many other people the chance to help society out too. She gave them all the chance to leave a mark on this world.

Harriet Tubman was a Civil War nurse, an Abolitionist, Advocate of Women’s Suffrage Movement, Civil Rights activist, Prominent figure in the Underground Railroad, and the first women in America to conduct an armed military raid (Accomplishments”). Harriet Tubman was free for 12 years, in those 12 years Harriet helped turn the Underground Railroad into one of the most important aspects of abolitionism and Harriet became one of the most active Figures in the movement (“Harriet Tubman Summary”). “Harriet Tubman helped shelter the poor and the elderly on the farm in Auburn though she herself struggled financially” (“Harriet Tubman Summary”). Harriet being a Conductor, she guided many slaves to freedom in her lifetime. Harriet, being raised as a slave and being black hasn’t stopped her from achieving these
Harriet had decided that other slaves' freedom was much more important than her life and that she needed to help those who couldn’t escape on their own. Her courageous actions gave other enslaved people the courage to escape from their mistreated lives on the hundreds of different plantations covering the South. While she was not able to rescue all of the slaves who wanted to escape before slavery was abolished, she touched all of their hearts by silently inspiring them and leading them to freedom. When the Civil War began, Harriet served as a nurse, taking care of soldiers as well as escaped slaves, nursing them to health with her medical skills.
