Today I will be comparing the aesthetic beauty of alternative rock and classic blues. One thing to note about connections between rock and blues is that classic blues basically started the chain reaction led to the creation of rock then alternative rock. Alternative rock and classic blues have a similar rhythm and purpose as well. The use of instruments is also similar between rock in general and blues, the uses of drums, guitars, and vocal. The manipulation and amplifying of instruments occurred throughout the life span of blues music as well. Along with a similar use of instruments and vocals, rock has the same emotion driven style used in blues even today. Classic blues goes all the way back to the early 1900's. In the differences of who listens to it, or who played it, classic blues was predominately related to African American people while alternative rock was predominately Caucasian. In classic blues a slow tempo is used unlike alternative rock where a fast-paced tempo is used. Often classic blues were often performed by night club singers who had a love for blues. According to the fourth edition of the American Popular Music, Bessie Smith, also known as the “Empress of the Blues”, was one of the many singers that played an important part of the popularization of the blues (130). Bessie’s version of St. Louis Blues ended up creating a way the taste in music of different communities to blend as well. When listening to an old blues song it can be clearly heard that whoever is singing is telling a story in a simple progression, and the most used instruments were those that would be categorized as brass like the sax., tuba, and other instruments played in a different way from rock such as the bass.
