Analysis of the Gods of Management: Zeus
Zeus, the king of the gods according to greco-roman mythology, is often depicted as a powerful and authoritative figure who wields lightning and thunderbolts. As a god of management, Zeus is the embodiment of a style that is both autocratic and paternalistic. His style of management according to Charles Handy is based on power with Zeus being a strong dynamic leader although he does have flaws.
I chose Zeus's management style because it’s a reflection of his role as the leader of the gods, who maintains order and balance in the universe. His style is characterized by clear lines of authority, a strict adherence to rules and regulations, and a focus on discipline and punishment for those who disobey. In terms of Handy's typology of management styles, Zeus's style is close to the "Power Culture". Power Culture is characterized as a single leader who makes all the decisions and wields absolute authority over their subjects. His tyrannical approach can oftentimes lead to a lack of innovation, creativity, and lots of chaos. In simpler terms, Zeus has an ego and disrespect is something that he refuses to tolerate. This is evidenced by the fact that many of the other gods in Greek mythology are often depicted as challenging Zeus's authority and rebelling against his rule. There are many examples throughout Greek mythology that support this, the most famous example being Hera’s attempt to overthrow him. To summarize, Hera drugged him because he was cheating so when he was unconscious she had people time him up.
