Being that our campus farm would not be able to immediately produce all the crops we need, we would have to have the campus food services buy locally grown or produced food, organic produce, and purchase food in bulk or with less packaging in order to proceed with promoting more sustainable food. Currently, most of the food found in Hughson High School’s cafeteria is the product of an unsustainable food system. The food that comes from an unsustainable food system causes environmental damages such as destroying soil, its dependence on foreign oil, contamination of water, and reducing the ability to even grow crops at all. We asked four questions relating to the topic and got some very insightful answers. Our first question was “What are your feelings relating to stocking the cafeteria with school-grown produce?” in which Ms. Schmidig replied with “I think it’s a great idea, but there are many precautions that the school would have to go through to be able to do this. I know other schools that do this and it can cost quite a bit of money.” From there we asked “Could it be possible to give fresh produce to the cafeteria if the school went through the proper precautions?” she replied with “Our FFA program has two main priorities at the moment that we use the fresh produce for, which are fair firstly and the farmer’s market second.” Continuing with the interview we asked “Do you think we could produce enough food to stock the cafeteria every day?” Ms. Schmidig simply stated “Here at the high school we don't have enough space to farm that much food. If we had enough space, then maybe.” Our last question of the interview was “How much do you think it would cost to stock our cafeteria?” Ms. Schmidig said “I don’t know, but I think it would totally be worth it.
