In chapter six, Twain manipulates his reader’s response to racism by controlling the speaker and surrounding circumstances of the bigoted statements in a way that pushes the reader to reject the racism because they have already rejected the speaker. In order to influence his readers, Twain utilizes the rhetorical devices of characterization and satire to show the immorality of the racist message.
“Indecency, vulgarity, obscenity (these are strictly confined to man); he invented them” (Twain). In this satirical essay Mark Twain discusses his ideas about mankind’s useless morel sense. He observes that humans are the only species to possess a moral sense, yet they use it to perform evil. He states after comparing animals to humans he is humiliated to conclude that man is the least evolved of all species. Despite his use of satire, false authority and hasty generalizations, his piece was successful.
The “greatest American humorist of his age”, Mark Twain once said, “Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.” From Missouri to Nevada, apprentice to father of American literature, short stories to novels—Twain became the well-known author he is today because of the impact his life adventures and trial had on him (5). Author of the excerpt from A Presidential Candidate, Twain often used humor and wit to illustrate his stories and make his point known. Through his use of satire, irony, and rhetorical questions, Twain exposes the perceived truths of the Presidential campaigns and candidacies. In his excerpt, Twain uses satire to illustrate how anyone can run for President regardless of experience (14).
Hungry Hungry Politicians In the short story “Cannibalism in the Cars” by Mark Twain, the author uses satire, imagery, and irony to poke fun at how political decisions are made, and by using cannibalism as an effective way to raise one’s attention. Mark Twain shows dark humor in his work is by using satire. He uses satire as a tool to make fun of a destructive situation in hopes of creating a positive outlook. The story is written as if the congress men trapped on the train are literally eating each other.
Many people utilize satire to get a message across, using exaggerations and irony as a tool for humor. Throughout Huck’s adventures, Mark Twain uses satire to mock society in America. The people he encounters and the events he engages in are designed to poke fun at American people. Huck’s superstitions are a way of satirizing religion and how quickly he goes from prayer to superstitions. Twain also satirizes racism throughout Huck’s adventures and shows an excessive use of the word “nigger,” showing how racist the characters are.
Mark Twain uses satire to portray different issues that were going on during the time period. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, author Mark Twain uses Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer to represent romanticism and realism. Doing so formed the characters into two drastically different persons. Mark Twain uses satirical elements to contrast the two main characters in their personalities and views. Tom Sawyer is a child who is blinded with fictional literature and the worlds view on slaves.
In this essay, I will be explaining how Mark Twain utilizes satire in the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. I will cover many examples of satire in this essay because I really have no other choice. Now without further ado let us get onto this essay I've been forced into doing. Let us first start off with the satire that happens in the church. The first occurrence here is when they are making fun of religion when they have to memorize the scripture instead of learning and studying it.

When we hear about Sunday school or church we are often made to think of it as a funny or joking situation. We are told about a typical Sunday morning that begins with Sunday school. To get ready tom decides to go to Sid to “get his verses”. Sid had memorized his lesson days before tom who decides to get a “vague general idea of his lesson, but no more, for his mind was traversing the whole field of human thought and his hands were busy with distracting recreations.”
History have shown many rebels fights for what they believed in. They fought for their freedom, their rights, and their dignity. But there are some people who selflessly fought for others, and one of them is Mark Twain. Samuel Langhorne Clemens or Mark Twain was born November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. He is one of the most iconic figure in literary.
Mark Twain's Use of Satire in Huckleberry Finn Throughout his pieces of literature, the famous American author Mark Twain portrays his personal views of society using satire and irony in his stories. He makes fun of broken parts in the American society relentlessly and makes sure the readers understand how outrageous some acts were during the early-to-mid 1800s. Twain seems to target specific aspects in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn such as how young people could be conflicted between morality and legality, the loss of self-respect for money, and the effects of herd mentality. He has an interesting approach at giving the reader insight, but his main ideas for the theme shine through and are clearly depicted.
Twain claims that satire, “ involves the mocking of human behavior and social interaction to form a point.” In other words, satire mocks how someone behaves socially to prove an idea. Twain mocks advice that adults give youth along with the idea of it in his piece “Advice to Youth.” The advice that Twain gives are words that are typically said to youth but explained it in a creative way. For example, one piece of advice he gives to youth is, “Be respectful to your superiors,- if a person offends you, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brink.”
Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens, also known as, Mark Twain was a humorist and romantic. Twain is classified as writer in the Romantic and Realistic Period (Dendinger). Twain got a copious amount of inspiration for the settings of his novels and short stories from his travels in Europe and his boyhood. Mark Twain’s travels, boyhood, and pessimistic attitude greatly affected his writings and are what make him one of America’s greatest and most well-known authors (Pullen). Growing up in Missouri, Twain’s boyhood was full of adventurous experiences and he spent a lot of time outside and around the Mississippi River.
Satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. A literary work in which human foolishness or vice is attacked through irony, derision, or wit. Mockery is teasing and contemptuous language or behavior directed at a particular person or thing. Also the behavior or speech that makes fun of someone or something in a hurtful way. “The Rape of the Lock” by Alexander Pope and “My Satirical Self” by Wyatt Mason from The New York times are both about satire and mockery.
