Cleopatra VII was born sometime between 69 BC and 68 BC. Her and her two older sisters were the beautiful daughters of Ptolemy XII, A weak and struggling ruler of Egypt, and his wife who is unknown. After Cleopatra’s mother died her father remarried and had a girl and two boys. Although all of the children loved each other, they were always trying to outshine one another in attempt to win the power of the throne.
As she grew up Cleopatra was given an unusually good education. She learned the myths of the Greeks and Egyptian gods and goddesses, and advance fairly quickly in more advanced literature, the arts, science and medicine, and the study of other languages. Although she was disappointed in marrying her brother, all was temporarily forgotten when she dressed up and goddess Isis for her wedding and was given the title of the “New Isis,” beloved above all goddesses. Ptolemy XIII and his advisers refused to acknowledge this arrangement and fighting broke out between them and Cleopatra was forced to flee the royal palace. After Cleopatra left Ptolemy XIII tried to convince Caesar to acknowledge him as sole ruler of Egypt and to keep Cleopatra from seeing him. Cleopatra, however, was able to sneak into the palace in Alexandria and successfully plead her case to Caesar, something that enraged Ptolemy XIII. Caesar denied Ptolemy XII’s request due to his fathers will and returned Cleopatra back to the throne. Cleopatra and Caesar then became lovers and had a son known as Caesarion. Ptolemy XIII later died in a failed attempt to rebel and was replaced as co-ruler by his and Cleopatra's younger brother Ptolemy XIV, who Cleopatra eventually had killed along with their sister Arsinoe IV.
