Introduction In nursing practice, creating an environment that preserves client dignity, demonstrates empathy, and fosters client collaboration is critical to optimizing client health (Edgman-Levitan & Schoenbaum, 2021). Such an environment is known as client-centered care. Recently, I had the opportunity to practice client-centered care through an interview with a resident during my clinical placement. During the interview, I inquired about the life experiences of Client X, as well as their definitions of health and culture. According to Alfaro-Lefevre, professionalism embodies the ideal performance levels that a nurse should exhibit (2020). In nursing, professionalism is carrying out one's practice with integrity and respect for clients and the profession. By applying professionalism, I can preserve the client's autonomy and dignity. Reflecting on my interview with Client X, I applied professionalism by demonstrating respect for the autonomy of Client X. For example, I introduced myself as a BCIT student nurse and informed Client X that I would use the interview for an academic paper that my professor would only see. This action demonstrated professionalism as I respected Client X's autonomy by providing information so they could decide whether to participate. Continuing to reflect on my interaction with Client X, I displayed professionalism by acting within my Term 1 scope of practice. To illustrate, Client X began to discuss their medications and wanted me to confirm the names and purposes of their new prescriptions. As this ability is outside my Term 1 scope of practice, I politely stated that while I understood Client X was seeking help and guidance, I could not address their concerns. Rather than limiting the interaction, I offered a solution, explaining that I could bring this to their nurse's attention should Client X desire clarity regarding their medications. This action enabled me to simultaneously preserve Client X's dignity by kindly redirecting their efforts to the appropriate channels, while upholding my respect for the nursing profession by acting within my scope of
