Critical Reflection Paper Broekeme, Paans, Roodbol, and Luttik (2020) highlight how an illness can burden every family member in a patient’s life and is significant to consider as a nurse to provide holistic care. This idea was emphasized throughout the course NUR 825: Family Health, as the importance of caring for families and incorporating them into practice was thoroughly discussed. Through completing the course activities, I learned that I have always been passionate about family health nursing to some degree but through this course, I have expanded my knowledge of working with families. Furthermore, I have learned about my strengths and weaknesses as a family health nurse. Earlier in this course, I participated in a professional development activity of a narrative reflection regarding an interaction with a family and how I represented family-centred care (see Appendix G). Reflecting on the activity, I learned how my incorporation of therapeutic conversations was a strength that has further evolved by engaging in course activities. Due to the week two ASF (see Appendix H), I learned how my strength of therapeutic conversations encourages nurses to acknowledge families’ expressions of feelings to empower them (Bell, 2016). Furthermore, I also learned that I was quick in implementing these concepts in my current practice, such as using positive language, as I recognized their significance through engaging in the activities. My comic encompasses a supportive nurse who cares and inquires about family experiences by actively listening to their feelings. The comic also displays collaboration and acknowledgment of families’ valuable perspectives, allowing nurses to empower them by recognizing the importance of their input. Furthermore, the comic manifesto depicts therapeutic conversations by merely asking families the broad question surrounding how they feel. Lastly, the comic manifesto also displays a key attribute of a family health nurse, which is respect. There will be many decisions and conversations with families that may not align with personal choices, however, remaining respectful is vital as a family health nurse to build a trusting and therapeutic relationship.
