The influence of actors and actresses in the film industry has lead to positive and negative views on certain groups and culture. In present day, media like films use generalized stereotypes that have lead to individuals of those certain groups to be stereotyped in real life. When we see others with nicer things or somebody else’s life that’s better than ours we feel this pressure that we need to be like that. When everybody surrounding you has one thing that you don’t have, you get made fun of for it. Media has a huge effect on how we think and what we think we should look like. We are constantly pushed into a mold by society to be something or somebody that we can’t be. Our family and all conformists that surround us, telling us we aren’t good enough for standards set by society.
One example is, “The ideal body demanded by society today corresponds to a slim, well-trained body”(Kiler, Rommerskirchen, and Brixius). The media enforces ideas upon society and makes people think that a standard must be set for something. This negatively impacts the people that don’t conform to the standards that the media gives society because society shuns them for not meeting those standards. Another example is how “there are often non-scientific and inaccurate statements behind Fitspiration-related posts”(Kiler, Rommerskirchen, and Brixius). There are often posts on the media that trick people into believing an idea; even if that product or idea has no real backing and is incorrect.

The media influences range from television shows from celebrities. Television shows like Modern Family are shows that are my favorite. Although they come out on the channel network Fox, and Fox is conservative they still show the show where they have an a same-sex couple who has a child. When Modern Family first showed their episode when the same-sex couple was getting ready to adopted a child, I agreed that they have a right to be able to adopt a child. There are issues on whether same-sex couples should adopt children because if same-sex couples adopt children there is one gender missing and people believe that the child will grow up the same as the parents.
Roberto Bolaño is quoted as stating, “People see what they want to see and what people want to see never has anything to do with the truth.” This quote is related to the novel All American Boys written by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely because the novel includes negative societal perceptions from various characters. Based on their own biases and perspectives of a situation, members of society create negative judgments about others, leading to discrimination and developing racist thinking. Stereotyping, needing to see something to believe it, and jumping to conclusions are all prime examples of negative thinking. By these three effects, personal biases and opinions on others are formed, resulting in the unjust categorization of one community.
Since the basically the beginning of time, society has not been very accepting. In society, if you are not like everyone else then you will not fit in with the rest of the world. In many books and articles, there are people who are left out of activities or are not accepted by others around them. A few of these stories and articles are a story about a family of wolves, but the wife’s husband isn’t quite the same as everyone else called “The Wife’s Story”, a video about a group of girls whose cultures don’t get along called “My so Called Enemy”, and an article about a man burning a flag called “Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion”. All of these articles have some sort of message about acceptance in them.
Mass media can have an effect on a person perception. It can change the way a person thinks or acts toward other people. Watching a particular movie or a television show can allow people to create assumptions about a certain group of people. Stereotypes are shown through the media in race, gender and social classes (Croteau 192). The people from the Middle East are one particular example of a race that is that is depicted in a negative light.
