In chapter 5 of The Blue Sweater, which was written by Jacqueline Novogratz, Jacqueline was a good listener who drew my attention. Novogratz explains that the only way to create a good business was to listen to the people who work with you. Jacqueline was ready to learn from the Rwandan women by listening to whatever thing they had to say. “On the other, I began to understand that I could have listened better, for listening is not just having the patience to wait, it is also learning how to ask the questions themselves” (86).in order to make a successful bakery business, she went to a great depth to listen to the African women. Alopecia Areata is a type of a disease that causes patchy hair-loss. At page #62, Anya’s wig detaches, and falls off. Anya, humiliated and speechless, rapidly snatched her wig, and ran out of the gym. The story states, “You lost your hair!”
Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-Li Jiang, is an autobiography about Jiang’s life during the time of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. She lived in Shanghai, China, with her family. The time period of the Chinese Cultural Revolution was a ten year span from 1966 to 1976. It was a political movement launched by the Chairman of the Communist Party in China, Mao Zedong. His goal was to protect the Communist ideology in China.
Read Mary Walker Wears the Pants by Cheryl Harness. This is a true story of the first American woman doctor named Mary Walker who received the Medal of Honor when she served her country during the Civil War; she remains the first and only woman to ever hold this high honor. Mary Walker fought for women’s rights and made a big statement during her time by wearing pants when women always wore dresses. After reading, ask students to work in pairs (partner pair share) to describe Mary Walker. In the poem “The Shirt” by Robert Pinksy, the author conveys that his article of clothing has historical value. The poem starts with imagery with the creation of the Shirt in a sweatshop. Then proceeds to take the reader to experience the tragedy at Triangle Factory. During this story, the author makes the imagery connection with the man stepping off the sill and how his clothes reacted in the wind. Additionally, Pinksy uses diction to convey this message.
Historical fiction novels allow the readers to get a basic idea of the time period the novel takes place in. The historical fiction novel, “The Shadow Spinner” by Susan Fletcher takes place in ancient Persia. The clothing of ancient Persia is portrayed by “A silky green gown floated down over my head...girdled my waist with a length of arose brocade--I slipped the comb inside it--then draped an amber-colored robe about my shoulders.” (Fletcher 33-34) This shows the outfit Marjan, the main character wears once she reaches the harem where the women reside.
She starts off as a cold, impersonal, studious professor who shows little emotion towards her diagnosis. Her changes are small but grow with each moment. In Katherine Mansfield’s “The Doll’s House” there is a much bigger story then what is being told. There is a lesson that can be learned by reading this story. Being prejudice isn’t always about people who are different colors or of different races, it can also be about people who are rich and people who are poor. People who have more money can be negative towards people who are not as well off, and people who have finer things and more money can have a negative personality, also Kezia appears to be a young girl with a still pure soul.
