The Elizabethan Era Fashion has some very interesting things about this period in 1550. “Clothes in the Elizabethan era (1558-1603 CE) became much more colorful, elaborate, and flamboyant than in previous periods. Clothing was an important indicator of status so those who could afford it were careful to wear the correct colors, materials, and latest fashions from Continental Europe (Cartwright)” The colors and styles made this Era of time very interesting to learn/read about. The richer people had more ability to have nicer, and more fashionable clothing during this time. Meanwhile, the lower-class people had less access to expensive clothing, so they made the same pieces with cheaper materials. The Elizabethan Fashion Era is important because of the Cloth Trade in 1550 CE, the Aristocracy of men’s clothes, and the Commoners made with cheap materials. “The doublet, a short, stiff jacket made of wool, leather, or thick cloth, was the most popular top garment for males. Collars and cuffs that could be removed were also in style, while ruffs were growing increasingly bizarre and needed wire supports” (“Elizabeth I: Fashion and Beauty”). Small adjustments like the deep V-shaped lower hem and the peas cod, extra padding around the stomach, became the new trendy thing for men’s fashion wear. Like the women’s fashion, the richer men got more access to nicer clothing and material. They wore extra padding to make them look more proper and to create outer fashionable shapes.
