The state of California has a rich history, and is also currently one of the leading states in agriculture. It contains a wide array of geographic features, varying from mountains to deserts, with lush, fertile farmland in between. The Mexicans fought to gain control of California from the Spanish, but soon lost it to the European settlers. When war erupted between Mexico and the settlers for control of California, the end result was California gaining Statehood with the United States. The Gold Rush of 1949 brought unprecedented prosperity.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
In 2015 in the middle of summer there was a conflagration. The conflagration was in a small town of M.T Vernon,Oregon and it burned for days and days. Firefighters tell me that it started because of the conflagration in California it started from the small embers that traveled and landed in a pile of hay,and spread to the dry grass. That is what I love about being a Californian. I can walk through my community and witness different cultures within our country. In terms of how I keep myself getting frustrated with ignorant or hurtful comments from my buddies that I served with, I do my best to first find the humor in it. Growing up in California, my whole life has been around farming and like many others, it’s how I make a living.
