The intention of this essay is four-fold. Firstly, to describe the purpose of coaching. Secondly, to compare and contrast coaching with counselling. Then this essay will critically review the ability to develop deep-listening as a coaching quality/skill and finally, I will provide a reflective analysis of my personal coaching competencies that I believe I had when I commenced this course.

The underlying principle of coaching is to facilitate the awareness and responsibility of the client (coachee/individual and/or team), to discover the options available in order to enable them to determine and reach their objectives and goals. It is a process whereby the coach asks the client open-ended and thought-provoking questions in order to raise the client's awareness and for them to reach their own solutions and answers. It is allowing the client the space for self-reflection in a non-judgemental environment. There is a certain amount of confusion as to the roles of coaching and counselling. INSERT QUOTE. The purpose of both coaching and counselling is the aim to improve someone's life. Whilst both MODALITIES require a coach or counsellor to have active listening and effective communication skills, being empathetic, earning trust and the ability to be discrete, are also desired.

The major distinction between coaching and counselling is that even though both involve asking meaningful questions and deep-listening skills, counsellors give advice and recommendations to their clients, which may also involve medical prescriptions as opposed to coaches who pose questions in order to raise the client's awareness, and encourages the client reach their own solution.
