Everyone has a favorite drink. Coca-Cola is the biggest drink in America. Its invention changed the way people looked at refreshment drinks. One can find a coke anywhere in America. On July 8, 1831, an inventor was born. His name was John Pemberton, and he would grow up to be the inventor of America’s most loved drink, Coca-Cola. Pemberton was born in Knoxville, Georgia. His family lived in Rome, Georgia, where he attended Rome’s local schools. According to King, Pemberton studied medicine and pharmacy at the Capital Reform Medical College of Georgia in Macon. (P. 1) He had actually practiced surgery and medicine first after getting licensed in 1850. “Although primarily a druggist, he also practiced some medicine, including eye surgery”. (Pendergrast, P. 17) On May 8, 1886, Pemberton created the Coca-Cola drink. Coca-Cola was first made in Atlanta, GA. The Coca-Cola executives knew that if they obtained a patent, the formula would soon be revealed. Patents are only kept secret for seventeen years. Pemberton revealed the drink consisted of the purest wine, extract from the leaf of Peruvian coca, and the kola nut. He also suggested that it helped one’s body. He claimed that his wine drink strengthened the muscles and nervous system, assisted in digestion, and more to help the body. Pemberton also admitted that his product was based on Vin Mariani, a popular French wine. In 1886, Atlanta prohibited the sale of wine, so Pemberton changed the ingredient from wine to sugar syrup.
