Burro Genius was a book I will always remember; it reminds me of my childhood well not the bullying part, but the environment like the ranch and horses having nothing to stress about. My parents were Mexican just like his, which gives us much in common I love being a Mexican American, nor I never questioned myself on why god made me Mexican on the other half Victor Villaseñor did mention in his book titled, “Burro Genius,” “Oh my Lord God, Papito!” I screamed, “WHY DID YOU LET ME BE BORN MEXICAN?” (70). It can be argued that from the start the film Selena gives the audience the wrong impression that Selena reached the pinnacle of her career when she successfully obtained an English- language crossover status. That is because the film opens with a scene of Selena singing in English to a sold-out concert at the Houston Astrodome which is meant to show “Selena’s career pinnacle” (Vargas 2006). Thus, the viewer’s initial impression of Selena is that Selena became successful only once she succeeded in the American music industry. However, if one were to look at the story of Selena from when she first debuted as a singer one would be able to see that is the not the case.

The idea of having these customs withstand the test of time is truly remarkable. A perfect example of the passing of tradition is the Mexican celebration of El Dia De Los Muertos. Although it has its origins from the Aztec Empire, the holiday is widely celebrated in Latin America and even some parts of the United States.

Stereotypes are the main reason of the misconception of Hispanic, but are repeatedly use in cinema. As a matter of fact, many popular cultural cliché are used in films, such as “sombreros and […] Mexicans consuming only the three diet staples of chile, tacos, and liquor” (Hernandez). When I was little my mom introduced me to bands like Mana, artists like Romeo Santos, or Selena Quintanilla she would listen to, when she was growing up. All I can remember is I liked the beat even though I could not understand it. Though none that meant anything to me as long as my mom was pleased with me listening to the music. Though as I grew saw the impact the music had on American culture and it made me happy. Death is an aspect of life that all cultures must reconcile with, but how cultures reconcile with it varies. American culture tends to sterilize death and remove it from general conversation. The topic of death and the physical remnants of death are usually enclosed and kept as far out of sight as possible. In Mexico, on the other hand, death is both displayed and celebrated. Mexicans embrace death in both their spiritual and cultural lives.
