The Code of Hammurabi Hammurabi was king of Babylon 1792 B.C.E. As a leader, he was possibly one of the first to realize that power not be based on force. He realized the use of military intelligence, diplomacy, and strategic planning could accomplish much more than a small army and he would use his writing as a weapon. The Code of Hammurabi is a set a laws king Hammurabi came together with that act as a form of government in the sense that there was set process in which people could be accused of something and how the matter would be handled. This is a very early form of government which shows that the people of this time are becoming more intelligent and that they’re wanting people in this era to live at a set standard with punishment for those who go against this standard. There were still many flaws now sadly in wasn’t a perfect system. People of great wealth could avoid the worst punishment due to their wealth. This is something that no society yet has been able to overcome even in our country the rich can avoid prosecution with the money they have obtained. Women were not viewed as equals by any meaning of the word and were subjected to oppression under these laws. The ways they handled cases of homicide and witchcraft to determine who was at fault or guilty was a travesty. If someone accused another with homicide and could not give convincing evidence the accuser was to be killed. In the case of witchcraft if the accuser could not bring evidence they would test the accused in the river ordeal. If the river overwhelmed the man, the accuser would be given estate of the accused and if he survived the accuser would be killed and the accused would be given his estate. You will find that there are many differences and sadly something has yet to change even over thousands of years. They lived in society who oppressed women, laws in which the punishment did not fit the crime, and when slaves were such a common thing most their population had slaves. We live in a society that has given women freedom, laws have a fair punishment, and a time that slavery has been abolished. The one thing that has yet to have change is the power of the wealthy.
