The article, “Using Teleconsultation for Collaboration Between Occupational Therapy Fieldwork and Academic Settings” was created in 2014 by Rebecca Nicholson, Laine Bassham, Amy Chapman and Debra Fricker and seeks to determine if using teleconsultation for fieldwork, academic settings and in the workplace will be beneficial to students and practitioners. It is noted in the article that those living in rural areas have a greater risk for traumatic injury, infections and chronic illness than those in the metropolitan area (Kroneman, Verheij, Tacken, & van der Zee, 2010). With that being said, the need for medical services are needed, but they are not always provided. I myself have never considered the disadvantage that individuals may have based off of where they live. Often times we don’t think about issues that do not pertain to us. In the city I live in there are anywhere between 10-20 clinics that provide Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Physical Therapy alone. I am lucky to have options, but until I took the time to read this article, I did not realize that others were not as fortunate. Expanding health care to the Internet is not only helpful to practitioners and patients, but students as well. Those attending programs in secluded areas may find it difficult complete fieldwork assignments, which is a critical part of becoming a certified therapist. This article also addresses the opportunity for students to uses telecommunication to complete their schooling via online.
