A Little At A Time I don’t have big, great, and innovative ideas as to how I’d like to give back to Hawai’i. My goal is to further my education so that one day I do have big, great, and innovative ideas as to how I’d like to give back to Hawaii. Until then, I want to do whatever little things I can. I believe that the little things in life make a big difference. It can be as simple smiling, saying hello, holding the door open, or offering to lend a hand. People often think that you need to do something big to give back to the community, but I feel the little things are just as important. The first step is being nice. Kindness and compassion can work wonders. Being nice would be the starting point, so giving back wouldn’t and shouldn’t end there. While I may not have a wonderful idea of how to help people, other people do have wonderful ideas and have already created programs and foundations dedicated to helping others. This transition period into the next stage of my life is a perfect time to start participating more in volunteer programs. Hawaii has lots of programs all over the islands. Even if I go to mainland for college, my breaks would be a good time to volunteer in programs here at home. Participating in pre-established programs is a great second step in giving back to the community. As with anything in life, giving back is an upward progression. After high school, I will go to college, and there I will learn so much more. I could use that knowledge and the experiences I gained over time to better identify problems here in Hawaii and be capable of creating great solutions. So, my ultimate goal for giving back is to start small and begin doing more and more as I grow over time and use my new knowledge and life experiences to do something more than give a smile or volunteer for the summer. I would like to eventually start programs or foundations that help people in
