I cannot imagine a world without poetry and art; my life has always been a balance between the artistic and the academic. An obsession with words and aesthetics inspired me to take an interdisciplinary approach to drawing— last year, I created ten compositions that were composed of a charcoal self-portrait and relevant poem I wrote. My message was that words, like art, reveal our soul. I am in every single sketch and scribbled poem I have created.

Society is reflected in art, and I have always aimed to portray different emotions and concepts in my work, whether it be in the medium of a poem, drawing, or article of clothing. I am drawn towards a program where I will not have to choose between my two loves — writing and art. The complimentary nature of the Brown-RISD program would allow me to pursue an interdisciplinary education where I could create more meaningful, provocative fashion scenes.
Fashion and writing are mediums, the quintessential blank canvas that can be splattered, torn, altered with ideas and feelings. I have created garments to reflect historical time periods, and others inspired by the rhythm of a rap song. I have written prose about clothes and sewn outfits inspired by poems. English and art are intertwined.
I thrive in intensive situations. Although the Foundational Program at RISD is challenging, it would allow me to explore different mediums. I was attending art classes before I was old enough to attend school; however, my AP Art requires a large art piece to be completed every week.
