I have an innate curiosity for how things work. Whether it’s researching the mechanisms of metastasis in cancer cells or learning about how mutations in a single gene can cause disorders that affect the entire body, I have always been fascinated by what causes things to happen the way they do at the molecular level. This curiosity, coupled with my admiration for intimate doctor-patient relationships, fueled my aspiration to become a physician. Through shadowing a hand surgeon and a gynecologist and volunteering at nursing homes, I have engaged with many patients and listened to their unique stories. These experiences have further deepened my interest in medicine and my desire to become a physician. One of the aspects I want to place a strong emphasis on is receiving a liberal arts education. Through taking classes in areas like anthropology and religious studies, I hope to better understand the cultures and religions of other individuals. Taking liberal arts courses would allow me to learn about people whose experiences of the world are utterly distinct from mine. The books and literature I will get exposure to in these courses would enable me to appreciate the different opinions and perspectives of others. As technologies expand and fields become increasingly interdisciplinary, it is vital to have these skills in order to collaborate with all kinds of individuals, especially in such a diverse society.
