Over the course of centuries, different prominent thinkers had a different take on the question "what does it mean to own something". There have been different claims made by thinkers and philosophers that add to the topic with their own opinion on what does owning something mean. As some like Plato believe ownership is detrimental while thinkers like Aristotle believe that "Ownership" of tangible objects is beneficial as it helps to develops moral character. Also, the meaning of "ownership" developed over time as people such as Sartre believe it included tangible and intangible objects like skills basically opposing the view that ownership is only tangible objects. For examples, doctors such as surgeons who have obtained ownership in a skill that is needed and that many cannot perform. As they worked hard by going to school for eleven years to retrieve that skill and have dedicated a chunk of their lives to becoming a doctor and pursuing that profession. When receiving their skill their minds have matured and caused them to realize that the skill they have is intangible for many and can be used to save lives. Once people such as surgeons own a skill that many don't have their sense of selves develops. As they don't want to keep their skills to themselves since they want to integrate their knowledge to go and help people's lives improve. For instance, I own personally own the book "Of Mice and Men" and I also had a change to thoroughly read the short novel. By buying the book I have retrieved ownership of it since it is now mine. Furthermore, by reading the book and understanding the characters and the plot I now receive ownership of an intangible object which is understanding the novel and how the story develops. As of now my sense of self has change as I began to understand the impact of isolation on a person and the importance of friendship.
