Martin Luther King Jr. once said “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” In the supreme sense of joy that I receive in learning about either the failures or successes of humanity, history has shaped my identity. My passion is to further my knowledge in the past events of the world and current events.
There exists no single catalyst for my newfound interest, it came gradually, as I started to casually web browse during my middle school days. Throughout seventh grade, I started to watch YouTube videos about history, with documentaries about ancient Rome as an example. I enrolled in honors world history, in the interests of challenging myself in my favorite subject. Even with my high expectations, I never thought my teacher would have as profound an impact on myself as he did. Seeing his exuberance in educating his pupils about something that he loved showed me there is fulfillment to enlightening others about one’s passion. One concept, which stuck out to me was the emphasis that he placed on having a genuine care for voting in elections. There were individuals who claimed they weren’t concerned about politics, but he argued that, in order for us to truly understand history, we had to be actively involved in the history we create. Two weeks after he introduced the viewpoint, and consistently pressing the idea, he eventually won over the whole class. The class was able to have an intelligent political conversation in a way that a majority of high school students cannot, and more importantly, the students were actually interested. The class was now engaged in discussing subjects pertaining to elections, and concepts concerning government and democracy. Clearly, this was someone who recognized how critical it is to inform young people about the world around them. I realized that I could work to become a history teacher, and incorporate all the best elements of my high school education into my
